ARC Conference - The Challenges Ahead

The aim of any health service provider is to offer a high quality, patient-centred service, but in the rapidly changing field of antenatal screening and pregnancy care, what does this mean? This Conference brings together experts in the field of antenatal screening and diagnosis, the management of fetal abnormality and will explore some of the complications which arise. The Conference will look at areas of practice which are challenging to practitioners and service providers.

The conference will be held on Monday 21 July 2008 at the School of Health and Life Sciences, Franklin-Wilkins Building, Stamford Street, London SE1 9NN

ARC's 20th Anniversary

2008 marks the 20th anniversary of ARC as a charity. ARC was officially set up in 1988 as SATFA (Support After Termination for Abnormality) by a handful of parents and health professionals, employing a worker for two days a week. In 1992 SATFA became Support AROUND Termination for Abnormality and was eventually handed over the mantle of its Scottish sister charity CARE. In 1998 SATFA became ARC (Antenatal Results and Choices) in response to the increase demand from parents wanting information about antenatal testing, and support in the continuation of a pregnancy. It has grown from those early days to become highly respected support service for parents facing difficulties around antenatal testing and the future of the pregnancy when an abnormality is diagnosed in an unborn baby.

Sadly 20 years on there are still parents needing our services and sadder still many parents who may need us who have never been informed and remain unaware of our services. ARC is a difficult charity to promote; it confronts some of the most difficult aspects of parenthood for both parents and health professionals. We would like to take this opportunity to build upon the work we have done and raise the profile of ARC s that parents are not put in the position of having nowhere to turn to get impartial support and information.

Some ARC members have been with us for many years, some right from the start. We would like to here from you about how things have changed over these two decades and the part ARC may have played. Anecdotes, thoughts, stories, photos, anything!

Please call, write or email us. We are hoping to put together a Special 20th Anniversary edition of ARC News this year. Tell us how things have changed - for better or worse!

A Handbook to be given to parents when an abnormality is diagnosed in their unborn baby (2007 edition)

We are pleased to announce the launch of the fifth edition of ARC's widely-used handbook for parents who are facing a possible termination of pregnancy after the diagnosis of abnormality. ARC first produced our parents' handbook in 1990 and it has been consistently cited by parents and professionals as a hugely valuable resource.

'Our hospital gave us your booklet which helped us tremendously. We could not have been prepared spiritually or physically, for one of the most difficult days of our lives, if we hadn't been given that book. It should ALWAYS be given, to whomever is about to go through it, rather than given as an after-thought. Your advice was concise, clear, considered, and well-written. In the midst of the confusion, guilt, anguish, it was just the right thing. Thank you.' Letter to ARC

The booklet goes into some detail about what a termination of pregnancy for abnormality entails in order to help parents prepare for the practical and emotional issues they may face. It also enables parents to explore the choices they may have within the process, which can give them some sense of control amidst the shock and grief.

A successful launch of Awareness Week took place at the House of Commons. Many thanks to everyone who fundraised, held events and leafleted for us.
