London-based training

It takes time, experience and training to gain the confidence needed to tackle the difficult topic of fetal abnormality. ARC training enables the health professional to be able to respond both practically and emotionally to parents’ needs.

Level 1 - Communication skills and breaking bad news: The implications of antenatal screening and testing

Training aims:

The course focuses on self-awareness within the context of antenatal screening and the diagnosis of fetal abnormality and includes a combination of theoretical learning, group-work and discussions. The training affords practitioners an opportunity to develop the skills needed to give sensitive care to their clients. Emphasis is placed on the parent's perspective of antenatal screening, and the experience of the health professional.

Learning outcomes:

  • understand the parents' experience of screening, testing and diagnosis
  • develop effective listening during times of stress and crisis
  • explore ways of breaking bad news
  • support and inform the decision-making process
  • become aware of attitudes, stereotypes and preconceptions
  • develop principles of good practice

The training day is offered as an 'ALL Health Professionals' day aimed at midwives, sonographers, and all other health professionals working in the field; and as a designated 'Sonographers' training day aimed at all those who work in obstetric ultrasound.

Level 2 - Supporting Parents' Decisions

Training aims:

This new Level 2 training day from ARC continues where its most popular Level 1 training day 'Communication Skills and Breaking Bad News' breaks off - at the point where parents have been given a diagnosis of fetal abnormality and must now consider their options. Supporting Parent's Decisions looks at how health professionals can best inform and support parents whilst they are in the process of making a decision, and once the decision has been made.

Learning outcomes:

  • examine ways of supporting parents through a diagnosis of fetal abnormality and the decision-making process
  • understand how to provide parents with non-directive support
  • understand the specific issues and support needs of parents who are continuing with an affected pregnancy
  • understand the specific issues and support needs of parents who are ending an affected pregnancy

N.B. It is a requisite of the day that participants have attended ARC's Level 1 training day.
