Parents Handbook

This handbook has been written to help parents who are considering a termination of pregnancy because an abnormality has been diagnosed in their baby. While it is still an uncommon happening, at least 2,000 parents go through this experience each year.

Choosing to end a pregnancy is a very difficult and painful decision. We hope that this handbook will provide some information and support for parents when they are faced with making a decision about the future of their pregnancy. We hope it will also be helpful to all those caring for the parents, whether they are professional medical staff, family or friends.

Supporting You Throughout Your Pregnancy

This handbook has been especially written to help parents who choose to continue with a pregnancy after an abnormality has been diagnosed in their baby. Being told that your unborn baby has an anomaly is most often unexpected and something for which parents are completely unprepared. 'Supporting you throughout your pregnancy: a handbook for parents after a prenatal diagnosis' provides practical advice, information and support to parents in this situation and is the result of consultation and research into their needs during this difficult time.

Many parents find that, after the diagnosis, care tends to focus on the baby's condition. In the words of one mother: "I don't actually feel like a pregnant person. I feel like I've got a baby with a problem." In view of this, the booklet aims to help parents address their concerns and find appropriate support for themselves during what can be a very stressful time.

Help for Fathers

For a man who wants to be a father, pregnancy is a time of hope, with expectations for his family's future with a growing baby, a healthy child. However, every couple has a risk of conceiving a baby with an abnormality. When abnormalities are detected in an unborn baby, parents have to make the difficult decision of whether or not to continue with the pregnancy.

ARC is the only national charity that offers specialised information and support to parents facing this decision. ARC provides ongoing support to many of the 2000 families who end their pregnancies each year because an abnormality was diagnosed in their baby. ARC also provides ongoing support to parents who choose to continue with their pregnancy. This leaflet is based on our work with fathers. It talks about some of the emotions other men have felt, and gives advice on how to cope, based on their experiences.
