2008 marks the 20th anniversary of ARC as a registered charity. ARC was set up in 1988 as SATFA (Support After Termination for Abnormality) by a handful of parents and health professionals, employing a worker for two days a week.
In 1998 SATFA became ARC (Antenatal Results and Choices) in response to the increase demand from parents wanting information about antenatal testing, and support with decision-making. It has grown from those early days to become a highly respected support service for parents facing difficulties around antenatal testing and the future of the pregnancy when an abnormality is diagnosed.
Sadly, 20 years on, there are still parents needing our services and sadder still many parents who may need us who have never been informed and remain unaware of our existence. ARC is a difficult charity to promote; it confronts some of the most sensitive aspects of parenthood for both parents and health professionals. We would like to take this opportunity to build upon the work we have done and raise the profile of ARC so that parents are not put in the position of having nowhere to turn to get impartial support and information.
Some ARC members have been with us for many years, some right from the start. We would like to here from you about how things have changed over these two decades and the part ARC may have played. Anecdotes, thoughts, stories, photos, anything!
Please call, write or email us. We are hoping to put together Special 20th Anniversary editions of ARC News this year. Tell us how things have changed - for better or worse!
