NIPD - not ready yet

Posted: 10 August 2009

Non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) for Down’s syndrome is not here yet

The replacement of invasive procedures such as CVS and amniocentesis by non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) will be an exciting and welcome development. However, it is still at the research stage and is at least five years from being safe and accurate enough to be available either privately or within the NHS to diagnose Down’s syndrome. ARC wishes Professor Lyn Chitty and her RAPID research project team every success in bringing NIPD for Down’s syndrome closer.
